Propiedad de Paradise – Panama Sport Fishing Lodge: Panama …

Once again here in the Gulf of Chiriqui, Panama the action is absolutely on FIRE!!!! The yearly cycle of spawning bait and the following huge schools of Yellowfin Tunas is reaching it’s apex. It has come a little late this year, usually reaching it’s pinnacle in late March or April, much to the shagrin of a bunch of our clients. The past three months has been painfully frustrating for us to be right with the boiling tunas that just do not want to eat our baits. Live baits, poppers, jigs, and plastics we’d put right in their faces, time after time, and most of the time……nada! But over the past two weeks the pay back has finally come!!

We’ve been lucky enough to have clients the past couple of weeks and for the few days that we were out it has been nothing less than a full on campaign of shock and awe of Yellowfin Tuna madness! Also, multiple days of multiple hook ups and catches of Black Marlin that are right behind the tunas. Generally overcast skies and rain in the afternoon and everning has brought the water temps down to around 80-83 degrees and seemingly perfect conditions for the bait to move well up into the gulf here.

The word is out because boats from Costa Rica and other lodges from the Gulf of Panama are all coming here to experience the insane Marlin bite and Tuna madness going on right now. Enjoy the pics…………….

Fish Rap: Salmon fishing picking up after lull

Allen Bushnell

Fish Rap

After a brief lull salmon fishing has again taken off in the northern half of Monterey Bay. Anglers working the krill piles from Moss Landing to the east side of the Soquel Hole are reporting fast and furious fishing, and early limits for most.

“I fished today and we had eight fish by 11 a.m.,” Bayside Marine’s Todd Fraser said. Fraser, on the Easy Money, was trolling 50 to 60 feet down and using a combination of hoochies, spoons or Kocodile lures behind U.V. flashers.

“The salmon were fighting hard because they were high up in the water column,” Fraser said. “There are huge bait balls of krill boiling on the surface and birds working it with salmon under it.”

Captain Jimmy Sportfishing reported similar success. Hearkening to his commercial fishing roots, skipper Jim Rubin uses straight spoons while trolling, with no flashers. “These fish are so hot, we’re getting some only 10 feet down, with early limits on every trip,” Rubin said.

The quality of salmon is improving as well. Most fish caught recently are averaging 10 to 15 pounds with a few shakers in the mix and the occasional 20-pounder reported caught.

The weekend weather could not be better with a dropping swell and light winds forecast through Sunday. These benevolent conditions are attracting halibut into the shallows, and the catch rate for flatties is also rising. Ed Burrell at Capitola Boat and Bait weighed in a few this week already,

including one caught near Capitola kelp beds on a swim bait. Fraser said the best halibut fishing is near the mile buoy and up along the West Cliff area. Depths of 30 to 70 feet of water are producing the best for the flatties. Swim baits are obviously working well, but dead squid is a standby halibut bait and live anchovies or sardines always work the best. Carl Azevedo at Boccie Boy Bait in the Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor is on the hunt for finfish to stock his receiver. So far, he has not seen much bait inshore.

Rockfish season is now open and good scores have been reported from the Capitola and West Cliff areas. Reports from North Coast spots such as Four Mile Beach and Davenport are scarce, most likely because most boats are catching salmon at the moment. Those areas have colder water and commonly fish slower this early in the season. Surf perching remains an easy alternative and the fishing can be very good once you find the right spot to cast your lure or bait. Celeste Donatini can testify to this, having landed a 4.3-pound barred surf perch earlier this week casting the surf near Rio Del Mar. Donatini caught the monster perch on a Krocodile lure.

Allen Bushnell can also be heard on The Let’s Go Fishing Radio Show Thursdays at 8 p.m. on KSCO radio 1080 AM. Send your photos, comments or questions to scruzfishing@yahoo.com

Alaska Airlines unveils big fuselage fish – KHQ Right Now – News …

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Alaska Airlines has come up with another big fuselage fish.

The 129-foot salmon is the result of a joint effort between Alaska Airlines and the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute. The design is intended to promote Alaska seafood and the airlines’ role in getting it to market.

The new design was unveiled Monday and replaces an earlier version unveiled in 2005.

Like the earlier one, it is an image of a wild Alaska king salmon. But this time there are fish scales on the plane’s winglets and a salmon-pink colored “Alaska” script across the fuselage.

The design will adorn a Boeing 737-800 beginning in the fall.

Last year, Alaska Airlines flew nearly 25 million pounds of seafood from Alaska to markets in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Photographing Fish | The Right Way

Steelhead Pictures

Closer to the water is better. Photo: Tom Larimer

We’ve run posts in the past with some tips on taking pictures of fish – but given what we see out there on the water, we’re considering this a ‘continuing education’ topic.  We hate seeing fish handled poorly and then released.

Scott Baker-McGarva, our head guide at BC West, put together some instructions on how to take fish pictures – with the proper emphasis on treating the fish right.  Please have a read, and please take it to heart.

Let’s Photograph That Fish – The Right Way

Let’s be honest, much has been said of this topic, so why does it still seem to confound so many?

You’ve come so far and looked so forward to the trip, and there, laying at your feet, is what makes it all worth it. Now, a quick picture and back it goes.

Let’s place the emphasis on ‘quick’ – since if I held your head under water as long as some hold fish out of water, you would understand why.

  1. Keep the fish in the water…this deserves a ‘duh’! But seriously, this is particularly helpful with a net or cradle so the fish doesn’t have other ideas before you get your moment.
  2. If you are the shooter…be ready! This means camera out of the case, turned on, set accordingly (ISO, function, etc), lens clean… The shooter, while yelling 20 instructions to the already nervous and generally uptight angler, should figure out where the best angle will be to shoot from. Generally a darker back ground is best, so I get out in the water and shoot back towards shore, avoiding the bright sky or water glare from ‘blowing out’ the image. Also…shoot LOTS…if the camera has a rapid frames per second setting…use it. Digital is great for this.  There isn’t a limit – delete bad shots after.
  3. Once ready for the shot, (sunglasses off, hair nice) firmly hold the wrist of the tail and cradle the belly.  Hold the fish up and point its nose slightly towards the shooter (but not in fully outstretched arms, that’s kinda over-done and silly).  Make sure the fish is over the water try to avoid a direct reflection from the sun on the fish’s sides. Also smile, look at the fish, look at the shooter, be happy!
  4. Do not stand up with the fish! Please, please, please…bended knee is it.  You wouldn’t like it I dropped you off a roof, so don’t do it to the fish.
  5. A nifty trick I’ll do is cover the fishes eye’s if the shooter didn’t read #2 and isn’t ready yet…it seems to calm them, most of the time anyway.
  6. Remember a fish resting in a net will be recovering fairly quickly and won’t like it when you start picking it up, so be firm and supporting in case it starts to wriggle all over.
  7. If the fish goes nuts and escapes your grasp, swimming madly about the beach…try to direct it the right direction and pass on more handling.  You had your chance!

DA: South Boston Murder Suspect Wanted To Steal Fishing Gear …

Update at 2:45 p.m.: More details about Kostka’s alleged motive in breaking into Coyne’s home, from the Suffolk County district attorney:

Evidence suggests [Kostka] intended to steal some high-end fishing equipment from another resident of the home, even making a call earlier that morning to see where he could sell it, but that equipment was not present. Instead, prosecutors say, it appears he tossed the house, ransacking jewelry boxes and a coin jar and taking certain other items from the home.

“Witness statements indicated he traveled to buy drugs in the aftermath of Coyne’s death,” the DA’s office added.

Update at 12:45 p.m.: Arraignment: Kostka was ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty to murder and home invasion charges at his arraignment just now.

Prosecutors said fingerprints and surveillance video led them to charge Kostka, who allegedly broke into Coyne’s home to steal valuables. Prosecutors said the two families knew each other.

Original post: Suspect is arrested:

An arrest has been made in connection with last week’s homicide of a 67-year-old woman in her South Boston home.

Boston Police and the Suffolk County district attorney yesterday arrested suspect Timothy Kostka, 26, also of South Boston, for the April 16 fatal stabbing of Barbara Coyne in her East 7th Street home. Kostka is charged with home invasion and murder.

Kostka will be arraigned today in South Boston District Court.

Police offered no word on a possible motive for the killing. They said the arrest followed witness information and the collection of forensic evidence.

WHDH-TV reports that “police linked the suspect to the crime after he was arrested for breaking into a home in the South End/Back Bay area over the weekend.” WHDH reports that forensic evidence at the South End/Back Bay crime scene matched evidence taken from Coyne’s South Boston home. A DA spokesman told the Boston Herald that Kostka was served the warrant while in custody.

Kostka lives just blocks away from Coyne’s home.

“He’s a local kid and we’re concerned how and why a local kid, or any kid, would do something like this,” state Sen. Jack Hart, who represents South Boston, told WCVB-TV.

Following the arrest, police passed along a statement from the Coyne family:

The family of Barbara Coyne extends their gratitude for the overwhelming expressions of condolences and support over the past week.

In particular, the family thanks Commissioner Davis and the Boston Police Department, Suffolk County District Attorney Conley and his staff for their professionalism.

Barbara Coyne was a beautiful, compassionate, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

Fishing Report: Salmon catches have declined lately

When things were sizzling down here, the bite up north had simmered down quite a bit.

“The bite we had going here the past two weeks was the best in at least 15, perhaps 20 years,” asserted Nipomo’s Harrell Kimball, who monitors saltwater fishing up and down the coast.

Between April 23 and Sunday, anglers embarking out of the Sports Launch at Port San Luis harvested 883 salmon.

Last week, wasn’t quite as good as the previous week, but 390 salmon were counted by PSL Boatyard personnel. Anglers aboard 194 dispatched boats returned with 131 salmon April 30. The next best catch was May 3 when fishermen aboard 30 boats returned with 83 salmon.

The prior week, April 23-April 29, there were 493 salmon caught by anglers on board 121 launched private boats. That was just the catches from the Avila area. Boats using the public launch site in Morro Bay experienced a “hot salmon bite” as well. But, there is no way to monitor the numbers there.

Early this week, nine salmon were reported by Boatyard personnel Monday and two more early Wednesday.

Trollers pay out one to three colors of leadcore line with C.D. Rapalas and dodger/crawler combos. Trolled spinners are working for crappie in the Narrows and Cachuma Bay. Bowfishing for carp has come on this past week. Carp are on the surface all over the lake.

Omitted last week were the catch of 14- and 16-inch trout on PowerBait by Anthony and Villa Reynells. The reservoir is open for fishing Wednesdays through Sundays.
